BAE vulnerable to break-up or U.S. bid if merger fails

," said an equities manager at a British investment house holding a stake in BAE.

"The conspiracy theorists say BAE are hoping to flush out a bid from one of the U.S. prime contractors."

Such plans could, however, be scuppered because of the U.S. government's reluctance to see more consolidation among their prime contractors and competition reduced. Some analysts believe this attitude could change given that BAE is one of the biggest foreign suppliers of weapons to the Pentagon.

"BAE's strategy has taken it deep into UK and U.S. defense but both of those markets are in deep trouble over the medium-term but at the moment doing nothing is not really an option for BAE," said Societe Generale defense analyst Zafar Khan.

If the merger falls foul of the many political and regulatory obstacles in its way, BAE will be left stranded and Ian King, its chief executive of four years, will face tough questions about his vision for the company, both past and present.

"BAE doesn't have a 'Plan B' as such, it's the deal with EADS or back to trying to drive growth from defense and cyber, which is pretty limited," said a source close to the British contractor.

CYBER SECURITY

In its most recent annual report BAE Chairman Dick Olver said the group's main strategic aims included developing its export business, building on its large geographic footprint and pushing growth at its cyber security arm.

"BAE Systems maintains a well-defined strategy with a defense focus at its core, but with the flexibility to adapt to changes in the business landscape," wrote Olver.

"BAE Systems will continue to keep its strategy under review and will move to adjust its portfolio of businesses where it is in the interests of shareholders to do so."

BAE is precluded from making statements that relate to the proposed EADS merger because of UK takeover panel rules.

In 2006, BAE sold its remaining 20 percent stake in Airbus for $3.5 billion to fund its big move into the then booming U.S. defense industry.

It had created a standalone U.S. business, BAE Inc, a year earlier which has since become one of the largest suppliers of weapons to the United States.

BAE Inc has grown through acquisitions and now competes toe-to-toe with prime U.S. contractors such as Lockheed, Northrop Grumman and Boeing . It reported revenues of $14.4 billion last year - around half of BAE total group sales.

"If a merger doesn't happen BAE are basically in play and a U.S. tie-up is possible but in that scenario I think BAE should sell its U.S. business," said Societe Generale's Khan, who believes that BAE Inc could fetch up to 10 billion pounds ($16.20 billion) on a debt free basis.

BAE Systems has a market capitalization of 10.7 billion pounds and debt of 1.23 billion pounds as of June 2012.

BAE Inc, however, expects U.S. defense spending cuts to hit its business in the coming years so any sale would need to happen sooner rather than later.

The United States, by far the largest market for weapons, already has plans in place to cut $487 billion from its defense budget over the next decade, while Congress could also make a further $500 billion in military spending cuts in January under a process known as sequestration.

DEEP TROUBLE

EADS is keen on a deal to balance its civil aviation exposure with more defense work, while BAE would gain access to planemaker Airbus, allowing it to diversify at a time when defense budgets around the world are contracting.

In recent years BAE has been throwing cash into its cyber security business, Detica, to help offset budget cuts and contract losses across its more lucrative traditional business of fighter jets and warships. This has failed to plug the hole.

BAE bought Detica in 2008 and has since pushed the cyber crime-fighting business into the commercial arena. It handles data and national security information for governments and is expanding further into telecoms, media and financial services.

EUROFIGHTER CONSORTIUM

Part of the Eurofighter consortium that lost out on the sale of 126 jets to India earlier this year, BAE expects to deliver only modest growth in 2012 - and that hinges on talks to renegotiate a jets deal with Saudi Arabia - one of its five 'home markets'.

BAE has cut thousands of jobs in recent years to combat spending cuts. Headcount at its land and armaments business, where sales fell 40 percent last year reflecting the end of a key vehicle program and reduced military operations, has halved since 2009. It plans to cut at least 2,000 jobs as Typhoon orders slow.

"By considering this deal, has BAE admitted that focusing on U.S. defense and cyber security was flawed and won't deliver real growth in the medium term? It looks like it," said a fund manager holding BAE stock, who wished to remain anonymous.

If the deal with EADS goes through, BAE's past forays into the automotive, construction and support services sectors in search of growth and reduced reliance on the defense sector will become a distant memory.

Since its privatization in the 1980s, British Aerospace, as BAE was then, has bought and sold mass market UK carmaker Rover, Dutch construction firm Ballast Nedam, German naval systems business Atlas Elektronik and its own aerostructures arm.

BAE is still chopping and changing today. It has hired consultancy firm LEK to review options for its British shipbuilding business including the possible closure or sale of one of its three shipyards in Scotland and southern England.

The British government holds a ?golden share' in BAE, granting it the right to block any deal, although Prime Minister David Cameron has made positive noises about the merger. If a U.S. suitor made a play for BAE Cameron would be unlikely to block a deal because such a deal would only strengthen Britain's ?special relationship' with the United States.

In a column in Britain's Daily Telegraph newspaper senior Conservative MP Bernard Jenkin urged the British government to "use its golden share to force the break-up of BAE, to ensure that key assets are owned by UK companies, and to create a more fragmented, entrepreneurial and creative set of businesses, to serve our interests and to export to the world."

Espirito Santo analyst Ed Stacey believes it would be difficult for King, who has a strained relationship with many of BAE's top shareholders, to remain as CEO if the EADS deal fails.

"It would be tough for King to go out on a roadshow saying he is completely committed to his strategy and is happy with his portfolio if the EADS deal doesn't happen," he said.

BAE's shares are at 321.30 pence, back below their price when news of the deal was leaked. They initially jumped but fell back on concern about political and regulatory barriers.

The main hurdle for King, though, is just getting the deal done one way or another.

"The risk is that everyone walks away and BAE is left like the emperor with no clothes. If they do a deal with EADS, King has won them a massive get-out-of-jail card. If they don't, the company is very exposed," said the BAE investor and equity manager.

Prison Planet.com ? Eight-year-old girl battles ovarian cancer before ...

Ethan A. Huff
Natural News
Sept 25, 2012

Ovarian cancer never used to be much of a threat to young girls, especially girls who have not yet hit puberty and whose ovaries are still developing. But today, an increasing number of adolescent girls, including eight-year-old Natalie Cosman of Manchester, Connecticut, face what doctors are now calling ovarian germ cell tumors, or tumors that spawn unexpectedly inside young girls? reproductive egg cells.

A recent?ABC News report explains that in Natalie?s case, the disease began manifesting itself in the form of persistent stomach pains, symptoms that her doctors routinely dismissed as nothing more than constipation or a stomach bug. But after a while, Natalie?s pains grew so severe that her parents decided to take her to the emergency room, where an ultrasound revealed that the pains were the result of a small cyst in one of Natalie?s ovaries.

The diagnosis came as a shock to Natalie?s parents, who were under the impression that ovarian cancers primarily occur in older women. The?National Cancer Institute (NCI), after all, estimates that as few as two percent of ovarian cancers occur in girls under the age of 20 ? and only a select few of these cases, if any, occur in girls that have not yet reached puberty. But this apparently is no longer the case.

?Especially girls who haven?t had their period yet, nothing should grow on their ovary,? said Dr. Judith Wolf, division chief of surgery at?MD Anderson Cancer Center near Houston, Texas, to?ABC News.

Are environmental chemicals, food toxins to blame for rise in ovarian cancer cases?

Dr. Wolf is right, at least as far as traditional trends are concerned. But things appear to be changing, as more and more prepubescent females are developing inexplicable tumors in their reproductive organs that require aggressive surgeries and toxic chemotherapy to treat in accordance with Western medicine?s guidelines for cancer treatment.

Young Sophie Fry from the U.K., also eight years old, had a similar experience with?ovarian cancer that required her to undergo intense chemotherapy, as well as surgery to have her tumor and an ovary removed. Sophie is considered to be the youngest female ever in the U.K. to be stricken with this rare form of ovarian cancer. (http://www.mirror.co.uk)

  • A d v e r t i s e m e n t

Modern science claims it is unclear what causes ovarian germ cell tumors, and whether or not they are the result of genetic or environmental factors. However, elevating rates of the condition appear to directly correlate with the steady rise in the number of?vaccines on the typical childhood vaccination schedule, the increased amount of hormones and antibiotics used in conventional foods, and the continued and growing use of untested genetically-modified organisms (GMOs) in the food supply, all of which are linked to fertility problems and cancer.

Bundesbank sees signs of German economic slowdown

FRANKFURT (Reuters) - Europe's powerhouse Germany is losing momentum as its economy is feeling the pain from a slowdown in the rest of the euro zone, the Bundesbank said on Monday.

The Bundesbank said in its monthly report for September that it expects the German economy to continue on its upward trend after a solid start to the third quarter, but it added that signs of a slowdown were emerging.

"Perspectives for the further economic development are still formed by great uncertainty," the Bundesbank said. "The domestic economic situation is so far robust, but signs of a weaker dynamics are noticeable."

The Bundesbank pointed to Germany's labour market, where the rise in employment was slowing down, also as companies were less willing to hire.

Germany's foreign trade especially could be hit stronger than before by developments in the euro area, the Bundesbank added.

The Munich-based Ifo think tank showed on Monday that German business sentiment dropped for the fifth successive month in September after economic momentum eased in the third quarter as weaker foreign demand weighed on exports.

While the German economy steamed ahead in the first three months of the year, saving the euro zone from recession by growing 0.5 percent, it lost momentum in the second quarter, with growth slowing to 0.3 percent.

The Finance Ministry warned in its monthly report last Friday that data pointed to economic growth weakening in the remainder of the year. Many economists are now predicting a contraction for the third and possibly the fourth quarters.

Google Play Books updated with new tools, highlighting and notes

Google Play Books

Google has updated their Play Books application, bringing a new set of tools such as definitions, maps integration, translation, and text highlighting. The new feature set brings along some great options that we've seen in other popular e-book apps, as well as some that we haven't.

With today's update, users can select a named place and have a card with a Google Maps view displayed, with the option to find out more via a Google search or from Wikipedia. Similarly, when you come across a word or term you're not familiar with you can tap it for a quick definition.

Taking things a bit further, you can also select a word or phrase and use the button in the action bar to translate it into other languages, presumably using Google's translate engine.

Last but not least, readers can now highlight sections and insert notes, which sync across the cloud to all devices running the app.

It's great to see Google keeping their applications fresh and filled with new features, but it's even more exciting to see them moving outside the confines of the US into other countries. Google Play Books is available in the U.S., Canada, Australia, Germany, Spain, Italy, France, Korea and Japan. Download it via the link above.

Secretary Clinton subtly weighs in on tax debate

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton appeared to subtly weigh in on the current tax debate in American politics, something she normally refrains from doing in her job as America's top diplomat.

Clinton made her comments in a keynote address address at her husband's Global Initiative conference. She spoke primarily about America's diplomacy goals for the 21 st century.

When Clinton talked about the collection of taxes in countries around the world, she was careful not to talk specifically about the United States or mention political parties or names, but after speaking generally about her belief that all nations need to have a tax policy where revenue is collected in an "equitable manner," she paused and said, "Especially from the elites" which received a huge applause from the audience.

Her comments came at a time when Congress is deadlocked over how to reform tax policies with President Obama and the Democrats urging higher taxes for the wealthy, while Republicans oppose any tax increases.

The secretary of state does not by tradition wade into domestic campaign politics.

"Now I'm out of American politics but it is a fact that around the world the elites from every country are making money," said Clinton who added with effect, "There are rich people?everywhere."

The secretary then switched gears and spoke about issues pertaining more specifically to developing countries, corrupt politicians and business people who don't contribute to building their countries infrastructure, which is vital to economic and democratic development.

"It means for leaders, telling powerful people things they don't want to hear," said Clinton. "It means being transparent about budget and revenues and bringing corruption to light."

Clinton also touched on the current unrest in the Middle East, repeating much of her statements over the last two weeks about the Arab Spring giving way to new democracies that are in need of nurturing from the United States, not disengagement. The secretary called this diplomatic pursuit America's "dignity agenda."

"We are standing up for democracies that unlock people's potential and standing against extremists who exploit people's frustrations," said Clinton.

Before she spoke, her husband former President Bill Clinton who's foundation sponsors the annual global conference, talked about the morning activities of the Clinton family, joking that introducing his wife was one of the most "useless" introductions he's ever given.

"We've already had a good morning, laughing and talking about events yesterday," said the former president. "Getting a report from Chelsea about a dinner she attended last night."

He delighted the crowd by reflecting on his wife's decades of service, telling them than when he met her "more than 40 years ago" the former first lady, senator and now Secretary of State was already a "walking NGO," he said.

Injured Matyushenko calls Hamill?s win a ?weak fight?

Matt Hamill's return to the Octagon was less than thrilling. Hamill may have won his first post-retirement bout with a decision over Roger Hollett, but he didn't win many fans with the slow, plodding bout. The crowd at UFC 152 in Toronto booed the bout, and the fight was panned on social media.

One of the notable tweets about how boring the fight was came from UFC fight Vladimir Matyushenko:

At one point, it was supposed to be Matyushenko in the cage with Hamill. The fight that was originally made for UFC 152 was Hamill vs. Hollett. However, Hollett was still under contract with Bellator. Matyushenko stepped in to fight Hamill, but then tore his Achilles' tendon in training. Hollett had his contract situation cleared up, and was brought back into fight Hamill.

But even with his torn tendon, Matyushenko thought he could still bring a better fight than the one he saw on Saturday night.

Does It Stress You Out When People Borrow Your Devices? [Chatroom]

When someone asks to use my laptop for a minute, or borrow my phone to check something real quick, I'll always say yes, but it drives me nuts. It probably dates back to my childhood, when watching my parents use the "kids' computer" for one reason or another always terrified me because they might find something they weren't supposed to. Like a bloody game I borrowed from a friend or...something else. More »

The Motivational Weightloss Program by Doctor Lloyd Glauberman ...

It seems that every month ushers in a fresh kind of diet for weight reduction. We see these diet plans on television, on journals and online in several guises most of them suggesting healthy diet, healthy exercise and healthy changes in lifestyle. More often than not, many people can fail at these diets before The Motivational Weightloss Program comes into their life. No, this is not still another diet frequency that gives the ways and methods to attain a lean and mean body via a pair of dietary instructions and exercise program. We already have a lot of of the services and goods on the market that may or may perhaps not work. In fact, you can choose the weight loss diet and exercise plan that you believe will work best for your case, all while also implementing the concepts present in Dr. Glauberman?s work. So, the question remains: What?s the The Motivational Weightloss Program? To put it simply, this can be a plan pressing on the countless psychological facets of fat loss. This system was created by famous psychologist and hypnotist, Lloyd Glauberman. You?ll need not worry as there are no subliminal communications contained in any portion of the program.Instead, Dr. Glauberman employs his innovative strategy known as Hypno Peripheral Processing (HPP) to create about lasting improvements in to how the listener believes about the niche of weight loss. You can find no diet and exercise programs in the The Motivational Weightloss Program since Dr. Glauberman wants to breakdown the intellectual obstacles that prevent everyone from actually implementing the weight loss programs offered by health and exercise experts.Think of the Dr. Lloyd Glauberman?s system being an essential adjunct therapy to your weight loss treatment. While your human anatomy undergoes the desired changes in form, size and circumference by way of a healthy diet and exercise program, your mind also undergoes a number of pleasant changes wherein you could adhere to your healthy lifestyle. If you have actually gone on yo-yo diets, backslid into overeating and reverted to being truly a couch potato, it could have been mostly because your brain was unprepared for these actual changes. This is where The Motivational Weightloss Program is available in. Little by little, you will condition your mind to just accept the physical changes being produced until such time that whatever lifestyle changes are needed in your weight loss program becomes 2nd nature for you. Like, if the changes in lifestyle say that you have to eat less, listening to the CD will condition your brain to actually eat less.Indeed, therefore many people fail in their weight loss efforts as a result of their exclusive focus on what the body needs and then pandering to it. The mind is then woefully and wrongfully ignored, which will maybe not be as weight loss is so usually an of mind over body. Therefore, if your weight loss programs aren?t going needlessly to say, we suggest playing the The Motivational Weightloss Program currently.

Victoria Advocate | Fire destroys Victoria home (video)

Originally published September 22, 2012 at 12:46 P.M., updated September 22, 2012 at 10:52 P.M.

Tears streamed down her face as she watched the flames consume her home.

Irreplaceable pictures, children?s clothes, toys, medication, school supplies ? in one afternoon, it was all gone.

And they were homeless. Again.

?I was just numb,? said Pamela Steward. ?I could not believe it. All we have is gone, but we have each other, so I thank God for that.?

Steward, who was granted custody of her five grandsons 3 years ago, said she has no idea how she will house the entire family, ages 3 to 15, after a fire ripped through her home in the 1000 block of Pecan Street on Saturday.

Steward said she and the boys were at a football game cheering for her grandson Sylias Montgomery, 12, when the blaze was reported at 12:18 p.m. With a healing broken knee and using a walker, Steward said she was just glad they weren?t home when the fire started.

Tom Legler, fire marshal with the Victoria Fire Department, said the blaze started in the utility room in the back of the house, but the exact cause remains under investigation. Also in the back of the house were the kids? bedrooms, Steward said.

?Oh my God,? was all Steward said she could think when she got the call.

?I thank God we were all out of that house because the oldest one and the 6-year-old wanted to stay home, and I told them they had to go support their brother,? she said.

Steward moved into the house on Pecan Street in December 2011, after Teryl and Kristi Taylor bought it for the family so they can rent to own.

Teryl Taylor said he met Steward while he was couching her grandson Quentin Jordan, now 15, a few years ago in Crossroads Youth Football League.

?It is just the grandma helping,? Taylor said. ?It was just her doing everything so we were just doing everything we could to help her.?

He was so moved by the family?s loyalty to one another that when he found out they were being evicted from their home, he said he had to do something to keep them together.

So he bought the house.

?He has helped us a lot,? Quentin said about Taylor. ?I don?t have a father figure in my life, so I treat him like my father figure.?

Quentin said their house wasn?t just a home, it was a priceless gesture from the Taylors.

?It is devastating,? he said, staring at the charred remains of the house. ?It sucks because we lost everything. We don?t have anything.?

Taylor said Steward was making payments on the house, but still owed about $12,000. The house and contents were not insured.

Linda May, emergency services specialist with the American Red Cross, said the agency is providing a three-night hotel stay and enough money for immediate needs, such as food.

Steward, however, said she doesn?t know what they will do next.

?We lost everything,? she said, still in shock. ?I have no way of preparing them for school ... Right now, I am just taking it one day at a time and praying I keep them together.?

Video Gaming Strategies For People Who Want To Win | Exact Article

If you really find this article helpful Give it a PLUS from below and help us to spread it.

Some games feature the option to make micro transactions. These transactions allow players to buy in game items that may improve the experience of the game. Make sure that your children seek your approval before making any micro transactions in game. Do not save your credit card information on the gaming console or PC, and if possible, set up a password on the system to prevent unauthorized transactions that may cost you lots of money.

When buying used video games, always open up the box and look at what you are buying before you leave the store. Examine the game and make sure that it does not have scratches on it. Make sure you have the instruction. Usually the gaming store will have multiple copies used for sale, if you do not like the one they give you, question for another.

Did you know you can rent consoles, too? If you only have one or two titles you like on a console, you can rent the console either online or at a local video game store and just have it long enough to get the game done at a fraction of the cost of buying the console outright.

If you want to stretch your video game budget, look for used games. These games are checked by the retailer to ensure that they are working properly. The discounted price on used games can allow you to buy multiple games you may want as opposed to dumping it all into one new game.

Thinking of getting a new game? You should watch some video of the actual game play before you buy it. Make sure the graphics and game play will be a excellent match for you. Do not go to the official YouTube release video by the vendor. Search for independent videos that are made by users.

If your child pays a lot of video games, it is vital to enforce limits. But, in this situation, you need to lead by example. Don?t spend all day wrapped up in your computer or on another technology device, or your child will reckon it is okay to do that with their games. Do other things as well, and make sure your child recognizes that you have other interests.

If you don?t have to have a video game as soon as it hits the stores, consider waiting a month or two and look for a price drop or used version. If you have patience, you can save a lot of money by waiting. The latest game may be really cool, but saving money can be cooler.

Don?t spend all of your game time killing aliens and taking over new worlds, try and learn something from the experience! Games offer fantastic ways to increase your knowledge that can be applied at school, the office or even in your kitchen. Devote a small gaming to personal improvement for a change!

If you choose not to preorder (or just forgot to), you can maybe still benefit the first day or two a game comes out. Many retailers bundle a freshly released game with a gift card or certificate worth ten or twenty dollars. This can make buying a new game at launch much cheaper.

Use lists to keep your information private when playing social games. Social games, such as the many available on Facebook are gaining popularity at a rapid rate. These games require cooperation, and are not meant to be played alone. This can make progression hard if you don?t have many friends. Adding friends solely to play games with is a fantastic way to get further in these games, but can leave your information at risk. Make a list of your gaming friends, and take advantage of the privacy settings available on Facebook to limit the access this list has to your information.

Parents need to be aware that all video games, just like movies, are not appropriate for all ages. In the United States there is a parental guidance system in place to help make the right buys. Be sure to familiarize yourself with this and learn which games are perfect for your child.

Consider buying second hand video games instead of new video games. Video games can be very expensive to buy new. Therefore, if you are operating on a limited budget, you may want to consider buying your video games second hand. There are many places where you can buy second hand video games, including eBay and local car boot sales.

Play video games to help you learn. Video games are not only a lot of fun, but they can be quite educational, too. If you or someone you know is having a hard time learning some concept, look for a game that will help teach it. You will be surprised at just how much a video game can teach you.

Video gaming can really enrich your life in a number of different ways. It can certainly increase your speed, agility and reflexes, depending on what you spend your time playing. There are virtually no limits to what you can gain from video gaming, if you play it right. Hopefully this article will bring your gaming up a notch or two.

Insults to Islam ignite violence in Pakistan, 15 killed

ISLAMABAD (Reuters) - Muslim protests against insults to the Prophet Mohammad turned violent in Pakistan, where at least 15 people were killed on Friday, the Muslim day of prayer, but remained mostly peaceful in other Islamic countries.

In France, where the publication of cartoons denigrating the Prophet stoked anger over an anti-Islam video made in California, authorities banned all protests over the issue.

"There will be strictly no exceptions. Demonstrations will be banned and broken up," said Interior Minister Manuel Valls.

Tunisia's Islamist-led government also banned protests against the images published by French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo. Four people were killed and almost 30 wounded last week when the U.S. embassy was stormed in a protest over the film.

Many Western and Muslim politicians and clerics have appealed for calm, denouncing those behind the mockery of the Prophet, but also condemning violent reactions to it.

At street level, Muslims enraged by attacks on their faith spoke of a culture war against those in the West who put rights to freedom of expression before religious sensitivities.

"They hate him (the Prophet Mohammad) and show this through their continued works in the West, through their writings, cartoons, films and the way they launch war against him in schools," said Abdessalam Abdullah, a preacher at a mosque in Beirut's Palestinian refugee camp of Bourj al-Barajneh.

Muslims consider any depiction of the Prophet blasphemous.

Western diplomatic missions in Muslim nations tightened security ahead of Friday prayers. France ordered embassies, schools and cultural centers to close in a score of countries and Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said some would stay shut over the weekend.

"CUT HIM IN PIECES"

In Pakistan, tens of thousands of people joined protests encouraged by the government in several cities including Islamabad, Karachi, Peshawar, Lahore, Multan and Muzaffarabad.

The bloodiest unrest erupted in the southern city of Karachi, where 10 people were killed, including three policemen, and more than 100 wounded, according to Allah Bachayo Memon, spokesman of the chief minister of Sindh province. He said about 20 vehicles, three banks and five cinemas were set on fire.

Crowds set two cinemas ablaze and ransacked shops in the northwestern city of Peshawar, clashing with riot police who fired tear gas. At least five people were killed.

In Mardan in the northwest, police said a Christian church was set on fire and several people hurt.

Mohammed Tariq Khan, a protester in Islamabad, said: "Our demand is that whoever has blasphemed against our holy Prophet should be handed over to us so we can cut him up into tiny pieces in front of the entire nation."

Security forces fired in the air in Peshawar and the eastern city of Lahore to keep protesters away from U.S. consulates. Police fired tear gas at about 1,000 protesters in Islamabad.

The U.S. embassy in Pakistan has run television spots, one featuring Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, saying the government had nothing to do with the film about Mohammad.

Pakistan had declared Friday a "Day of Love" for the Prophet and Prime Minister Raja Pervez Ashraf said an attack on Islam's founder was "an attack on the whole 1.5 billion Muslims".

The Foreign Ministry summoned the U.S. charg? d'affaires to lodge a protest over the video posted on YouTube, the latest in an array of irritants poisoning U.S.-Pakistani relations.

In neighboring Afghanistan, police contacted religious and community leaders to try to prevent bloodshed. Protests in Kabul and the northern city of Mazar-e-Sharif only attracted a few hundred people and no violence was reported, but a cleric told one crowd: "If you kill Americans, it's legal and allowable."

About 10,000 Islamists gathered in the Bangladeshi capital Dhaka after Friday prayers, chanting slogans and burning U.S. and French flags and an effigy of U.S. President Barack Obama.

PEACEFUL PROTESTS

Protests went off peacefully in the Arab world, where last week several embassies were attacked and the U.S. envoy to Libya was killed in an initial burst of unrest over the film.

Thousands of Libyans marched in Benghazi on Friday in support of democracy and against the Islamist militias that Washington blames for the attack on the U.S. consulate last week that killed four Americans including the ambassador. Authorities said eight people in total had been arrested over the attack.

Later, pro-government demonstrators stormed the headquarters of the Islamist Ansar al-Sharia militia, aiming to evict fighters from the site.

A few dozen Egyptians protested near the French embassy in Cairo, but were kept away from the premises by police deployed in large numbers to avoid a repeat of violence at the U.S. embassy last week.

Mainstream Islamic leaders in Egypt, where Islamist parties have moved to the heart of government since Hosni Mubarak was toppled, have expressed outrage, but urged a peaceful response.

In remarks to Reuters, the leader of the Nour Party, one of the biggest ultraorthodox Islamist parties in Egypt, echoed calls for the criminalization of insults to religions including Islam. But he said it was important to separate between an offender and an entire society.

"The reasonable people in the West outnumber the thoughtless," said Emad Abdel Ghafour. "Contact should be kept up with the reasonable people," he added. "It is unreasonable that reactions come through arson and killing. We all suffer and are affected by these acts," he said.

In Yemen, where the U.S. embassy was stormed last week, several hundred Shi'ite protesters chanted anti-American slogans, but riot police blocked the route to the embassy.

Anger over the film brought several thousand Shi'ites and Sunnis together in a rare show of sectarian unity in Iraq's southern city of Basra, where they burnt U.S. and Israeli flags.

Thousands marched against the film on Thursday in a district of eastern Saudi Arabia where members of the Shi'ite Muslim minority have staged anti-government demonstrations since last year, a local activist said. Photographs of the march showed protesters burning American flags.

Lebanon's Hezbollah-run al-Manar television showed thousands of people waving Lebanese and yellow Hezbollah flags as they marched past the Roman ruins of Baalbek and shouted slogans such as "Death to America, death to those who insult the Prophet".

Several hundred people demonstrated peacefully in the southwest German city of Freiburg. Some carried placards reading "Our Prophet Mohammad is taboo".

"Both the film and the cartoons are malicious and deliberately provocative. The film particularly portrays a disgracefully distorted image of Muslims," Rupert Colville, spokesman for U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay, told a news briefing in Geneva.

He said Pillay upheld people's right to protest peacefully, but saw no justification for violent and destructive reactions.

"In the case of Charlie Hebdo, given that they knew perfectly what happened in response to the film last week, it seems doubly irresponsible on their part to have published these cartoons," Colville said of the French magazine.

Twenty-three nuclear power plants found to be in tsunami risk areas

ScienceDaily (Sep. 21, 2012) ? Tsunamis are synonymous with the destruction of cities and homes and since the Japanese coast was devastated in March 2011 we now know that they cause nuclear disaster, endanger the safety of the population and pollute the environment. As such phenomena are still difficult to predict, a team of scientists have assessed "potentially dangerous" areas that are home to completed nuclear plants or those under construction.

In the study published in the journal Natural Hazards, the researchers drew a map of the world's geographic zones that are more at risk of large tsunamis. Based on this data, 23 nuclear power plants with 74 reactors have been identified in high risk areas. One of them includes Fukushima I. Out of them, 13 plants with 29 reactors are active; another four, that now have 20 reactors, are being expanded to house nine more; and there are seven new plants under construction with 16 reactors.

"We are dealing with the first vision of the global distribution of civil nuclear power plants situated on the coast and exposed to tsunamis," as explained by Jos? Manuel Rodr?guez-Llanes, coauthor of the study and researcher at the Centre for Research on the Epidemiology of Disasters (CRED) of the Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium. The authors used historical, archaeological, geological and instrumental records as a base for determining tsunami risk.

Despite the fact that the risk of these natural disasters threatens practically the entire western coast of the American continent, the Spanish/Portuguese Atlantic Coast and the coast of North Africa, the Eastern Mediterranean and areas of Oceania, especially in South and Southeast Asia are at greater risk due to the presence of atomic power stations.

For Debarati Guha-Sapir, another coauthor of the study and CRED researcher, "the impact of natural disaster is getting worse due to the growing interaction with technological installations."

China: a nuclear power in the making

Some 27 out of 64 nuclear reactors that are currently under construction in the world are found in China. This is an example of the massive nuclear investment of the Asian giant. "The most important fact is that 19 (two of which are in Taiwan) out of the 27 reactors are being built in areas identified as dangerous," state the authors of the study.

In the case of Japan, which in March 2011 suffered the consequences of the worse tsunami in its history, there are seven plants with 19 reactors at risk, one of which is currently under construction. South Korea is now expanding two plants at risk with five reactors. India (two reactors) and Pakistan (one reactor) could also feel the consequences of a tsunami in the plants.

The ghost of Fukushima

"The location of nuclear installations does not only have implications for their host countries but also for the areas which could be affected by radioactive leaks," as outlined by Joaqu?n Rodr?guez-Vidal, lead author of the study and researcher at the Geodynamics and Paleontology Department of the University of Huelva.

According to the study, we should learn our lessons from the Fukushima accident. For the authors, prevention and previous scientific studies are the best tools for avoiding such disasters. "But since the tsunami in 2004 the Indian Ocean region is still to take effective political measures," warn the researchers.

The Fukushima crisis took place in a highly developed country with one of the highest standards in scientific knowledge and technological infrastructure. "If it had occurred in a country less equipped for dealing with the consequences of catastrophe, the impact would have been a lot more serious for the world at large," claim the experts.

Therefore, Professor Rodr?guez-Vidal recommends the drafting of more local analyses that consider the seismic amplification of each nuclear power plant and determine the adaptation of installation identified in the study.

The iPhone 5 Has Arrived: But Which iPhone Is The Best Value?

iPhone5-iphone4sThe iPhone 5 is now on sale in most launch markets starting today, and as daylight approaches on the U.S. west coast, the coveted device will be hitting that market as well. According to early reviews, it's a great device, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's the right one for everybody. Even if you're still a potential iPhone buyer, the lineup has never looked so good. The iPhone 4 and the 4S remain on the market, and they both have a lot to offer, too, at a considerable discount.

IUDs, implants urged for teen girls' birth control

Teenage girls may prefer the pill, the patch or even wishful thinking, but their doctors should be recommending IUDs or hormonal implants - long-lasting and more effective birth control that you don't have to remember to use every time, the nation's leading gynecologists group said Thursday, Sept. 20, 2012. (AP Photo/Merck)

(AP) ? Teenage girls may prefer the pill, the patch or even wishful thinking, but their doctors should be recommending IUDs or hormonal implants ? long-lasting and more effective birth control that you don't have to remember to use every time, the nation's leading gynecologists group said Thursday.

The IUD and implants are safe and nearly 100 percent effective at preventing pregnancy, and should be "first-line recommendations," the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists said in updating its guidance for teens.

Both types of contraception are more invasive than the pill, requiring a doctor to put them in place. That, and cost, are probably why the pill is still the most popular form of contraception in the U.S.

But birth control pills often must be taken at the very same time every day to be most potent. And forgetting to take even one can lead to pregnancy, which is why the pill is sometimes only 91 percent effective.

An IUD, or intrauterine device, is a small, T-shaped piece of plastic inserted in the uterus that can prevent pregnancy for up to 10 years. An implant is a matchstick-size plastic rod that releases hormones. It is placed under the skin of the upper arm and usually lasts three years.

The new guidelines don't tell teens not to use other methods, but "if your goal is to prevent a pregnancy, then using an implant or an IUD would be the best way to do this," said Dr. Tina Raine-Bennett, head of the committee that wrote the recommendations.

The organization's previous guidelines, issued in 2007, also encouraged the use of IUDs and implants among teenagers. The new guidelines go further in saying physicians should discuss the two types of birth control with sexually active teens at every doctor visit.

The gynecologists group said condoms should still be used at all times because no other birth control method protects against AIDS and other sexually transmitted diseases.

While it may sound surprising that such invasive contraceptives are being endorsed for teenagers, 43 percent of girls ages 15 to 19 have had sex, a government survey found. Most are using some kind of effective birth control, but only about 5 percent use the long-lasting devices, the gynecologists group said.

In 21 states, all teenagers can get contraceptives without parental permission, according to the Guttmacher Institute, which tracks laws affecting women's health. A few other states allow it under certain circumstances.

The IUD and implant cost hundreds of dollars. The new health reform law requires health insurance plans to cover birth control without co-payments. Also, some publicly funded health clinics offer birth control free or at a reduced cost.

The American Academy of Pediatrics has been more cautious and has not endorsed specific methods of birth control, but is updating its guidance. Some pediatricians have been reluctant to recommend IUDs for teens, partly because of concerns over infection risks; an older model was blamed for infertility.

Dr. Paula Braverman, a University of Cincinnati physician involved in updating the academy's position, said the gynecologists' advice does a good job of clarifying misconceptions about IUDs and implants.

An IUD called the Dalkon Shield that was sold in the 1970s was linked to dangerous and sometimes deadly infections. Newer IUDs have been found to be safe, and the gynecologists group said the risk of pelvic infections increases only slightly during the first three weeks after insertion.

The hormonal implant has been updated, too. The newest kind uses just one thin rod; an older type no longer sold in the U.S. used six rods that sometimes didn't stay in place. IUDs and implants can be removed at any time with no lasting effect on fertility, the gynecologists group said.

"The ones on the market today are extremely safe," said Dr. Mary Fournier, an adolescent-medicine specialist at Chicago's Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital, who praised the new recommendations. "That is what everybody should be telling their patients."

She said she already recommends IUDs for her patients and is being trained in how to insert birth control implants.

Raine-Bennett, research director for women's health at Kaiser Permanente in Oakland, Calif., said she gets mixed reactions from her patients about both methods.

"Some of them say, 'Great! Something that I don't have to think about.' Others are, like, 'Hmmm, something in my body?' It really varies," she said.

Doctors need to be sensitive to that and provide detailed information to dispel any myths and allow teens to make informed decisions, Raine-Bennett said.

Persuasive Communication and Building a Profitable Business

When you have attracted people?s attention to your message about your expertise, you need to use persuasive communication to convert that interest into some form of ongoing relationship.

Just as in personal relationships, you need to give someone time to get to know you and find out what you can do.

In business, you need to take time to build trust and confidence with persuasive communication?before you ask for the sale.

There are several stages to building effective relationships with prospects and customers:

  • Know: You start off as a stranger so the first step is helping them get to know you and your business. You have to tell them about yourself and what you can do for them.
  • Trust: So that they come to trust you, you need to share information that gives them good value. Generally it?s best not to rush into trying to sell.
  • Try: Make it easy for them to sample your expertise and advice either free or at very low cost. If they like what they see, they?ll want more.
  • Buy: Give them the chance to invest money with you without a major commitment.
  • Repeat: Encourage them to stay with you longer and buy more.

Getting through all of these stages depends on ?the ABC of persuasive communication?.

The 5 Keys to Persuasive Communication

There are five keys to developing a persuasive communication strategy that takes people through these steps.

  • Act quickly
  • Build relationships
  • Communicate convincingly
  • Deliver on the promise
  • Extend the relationship

Act Quickly

Many people make the mistake of collecting email addresses and thinking the free report they offer is enough to create a relationship.

In your personal life, if someone asks for your contact details, and then never calls, you may be initially disappointed but you will probably forget them quickly.

Similarly, to establish a business relationship, you need to follow up the contact right away and with enthusiasm. You only have a short time to show this person you can make a difference in their life.

Build Relationships

There are many different elements in building the relationship ? depending on the type of product or service you offer ? but email is a particularly effective communication tool.

  • Planned: You need to put in place a series of pre-planned messages to go out to new email subscribers to let them get to know you. The first 30 days is especially vital.
  • Practical: You should be giving people information they can use and that they find valuable. Your aim is first to build trust before you try to take the relationship further. Handshake 300x199 Persuasive Communication and the ABC of Success

    Building Relationships

  • Persistent: You need an ongoing program of messages and the contact needs to be regular. You shouldn?t mail three times one week and then nothing for a month. A regular ezine or newsletter can be very effective for doing this.
  • Personal: The same message won?t work for everyone so you should segment your list based on what you know about people and tailor your message accordingly. You also need to share a bit of yourself to help people get to know you.
  • Purposeful: Each email should have a specific aim ? it might be to build trust, to share information or ? later in the process ? to ask for the sale. In the long run, your aim is usually to make money, so don?t be afraid to sell ? when the time is right and with an effective message.

Communicate Convincingly

There are several elements that are crucial to getting your message across in any media ? whether it?s a short email or a long sales letter or video.

Here are 9 key elements of convincing communication:

  1. Headline: The purpose of your headline (or subject line in email) is to grab the reader?s attention and get them interested.
  2. Opening: Having attracted their interest, you need to quickly encourage them to keep reading ? the opening sentence or two are therefore crucial.
  3. Problem: Your message must identify immediately with a need (or desire) they have ? usually a problem they desperately want to solve.
  4. Solution: Having reminded them of the need, you then need to demonstrate that you have a solution. You should explain how what you offer can meet their needs.
  5. Testimonials: People want to know that others have faced the same problem and been satisfied with your solution. Testimonials and case studies can do this effectively.
  6. Price / value: You need to tell them how much it costs but you must make your case for value by showing that the cost is tiny compared to the benefits they will get. email l1 Persuasive Communication and the ABC of Success

  7. Guarantee / risk reversal: Make it easy for them to decide to buy by offering some sort of guarantee that takes away or reduces the risk of buying.
  8. Call to action: Make very clear what you want them to do and don?t hesitate to ask for the sale.
  9. P.S.: One of the most read parts of your communication is the P.S. at the end so it?s a useful way to emphasize key messages.

Deliver on the Promise

The long-term success of the relationship will depend on how successful you are at giving people what they want.

  • Immediate delivery: Make it as easy as possible for people to order and receive their purchase. The delivery method obviously depends on what you sell. Online purchases can be delivered instantly, physical goods should be shipped quickly and communication about services should begin right away.
  • Follow-up service: The quality of relationship will often hinge on how well you respond to questions and problems. Even complaints turn into valued relationships when handled well.
  • Exceed expectations: You don?t build relationships by giving people what they expect. That won?t make them stay. You need to give them an experience that goes beyond what they expect so that they have no temptation to go anywhere else.

Extend the Relationship

As I mentioned earlier, the most important sale is not the first, it?s the second. That is what turns one-off customers into long-term relationships. Here are some of the keys to achieving that:

  • Upsell: Look for opportunities to sell people something in addition to what they have already bought. That may be at the same time as the sale or soon afterwards.
  • Continuity: Find ways to turn a sale into a long-term commitment through some kind of regular fee arrangement.
  • Retention: Work on ways to keep people with you ? especially if you have a product or service that people don?t need to buy very often. Look for ways to reward your best customers ? even a ?thank you? or small gift can pay huge dividends.
  • Referrals: While referrals are a very effective way of getting new customers, they are also great for holding on to your existing ones. People are less likely to move on if they have recommended you to someone else.
  • Reactivation: Past customers can become future customers if you stay in touch and give them an incentive to return.

Getting the Balance Right

All stages in the communication process are important for building long-term profitable relationships. However the emphasis can depend on what stage you are at with your business.

If you don?t have many customers, for example, you will need to work harder in the early stages to get more people on board.

Many businesses make the mistake of putting all their efforts into attracting new prospects.

Even with a small number of customers, it?s often best to focus on existing customers and contacts first.

As a general guide, you should usually allocate your time as follows:

  • 60% on existing customers, building depth into the relationships you already have with them ? and most of that with your best customers
  • 30% on prospects, seeking to convert them into customers
  • 10% on everybody else, aiming to turn them into prospects

Making a Start

There are three key elements you need in place to make all this work:

  • Autoresponder
  • Sales Page
  • Payment and Delivery Mechanism

Autoresponder

As mentioned in the section on creating an Online Platform, an autoresponder allows you to mail people at any time and also to set up a series of pre-written messages at pre-set intervals after they sign up.

You need to choose a reliable provider for this that has a proven record of reliability, a good range of services and is easy to use. Check out popular services such as Aweber.

Sales Page

You need to create a persuasive sales letter that explains to people why they should buy what you are offering.

  • For a free or low cost report, the sales letter could be just a couple of pages.
  • For a more complex or expensive offer, the letter will usually need to be much longer ? perhaps as much as 20 pages.
  • Video sales letters are also effective in some markets.

You can write the letter yourself ? and this is probably easier than you think if you follow a good, proven system.?Or you can hire a freelance copywriter, which could cost you anything from a couple of hundred bucks to several thousand, depending on their reputation and what you are looking for.

Payment and Delivery Mechanism

There are many options for collecting payments and delivering purchases. Your choice will depend on how much business you expect to do and how much of the process you want to do yourself.

If you are delivering everything online, you only need to hook up a PayPal button and create a download page. This will take you a couple of hours and you will be collecting payments immediately.

A popular method of collecting payments and delivering solutions online is a processor such as Clickbank which handles virtually all the payment processing work for you, including paying any affiliates.

Alternatively, you can set up your own merchant account and use a more sophisticated shopping cart.?If your solution has to be delivered offline ? either by post or in person ? you will need to set up separate fulfillment arrangements.

It?s often best to keep it simple to get started and use PayPal or Clickbank. You can move to other solutions if your needs change.
