Soccer-Maradona faces Eriksson competition for Iraq job - agent

BUENOS AIRES, Dec 21 (Reuters) - Diego Maradonas chances of becoming Iraq's coach hung in the balance on Friday as the Middle East country's soccer federation also studied options to sign Sven-Goran Eriksson instead.

The Swedish former England manager's name came into consideration as some 30 federation members met to discuss who would replace departed Brazilian Zico as Iraq's coach, said Hernan Tofoni, the agent representing Argentine great Maradona.

"There are about 30 club representatives who are meeting," Tofoni, whose Argentine company World Eleven is pushing Maradona's candidacy, told Reuters on Friday.

"They're enthused that Diego should coach their national team but other (federation) directors proposed Eriksson so the issue could be resolved next week," Tofoni added.

"We'll travel to Dubai next week to meet with Diego (and the directors)."

Tofoni told Reuters on Thursday that Maradona, former coach of United Arab Emirates side Al Wasl and now their consultant, was excited at the prospect of a chance to lead Iraq to the 2014 World Cup finals in Brazil.

Brazil great Zico quit last month leaving Iraq in third place in Group B in the fourth round of the Asian World Cup qualifiers. Japan lead with 13 points from five matches, while Iraq are equal on five points with second-placed Australia, who have a match in hand, and Oman. In Latin America, Women Are Breaking Barriers To Entrepreneurship

south america horizonEditor?s note:?Maria Rocio Paniagua currently works as a project manager at?Innku, one of the top mobile and web workshops in Mexico. The lack of women in technology in Latin America and the Caribbean is an issue whose cause has deep roots. Still, despite the barriers, there are examples of women disrupting not only businesses, but entire societies all over the continent. Entrepreneurship has proven to be an area where the few that excel really go the distance, particularly where technology is concerned.

Christmas Tour of Homes in Macon, Georgia - Part 1

The President of Intown Macon, said it so well in the booklet supplied with the map of all the homes on the Macon, Georgia Christmas Candlelight Tour of Homes......He said, "We hope you will experience the warmth and spirit that comes from being in a home lovingly cared for by different families over successive generations."? In Town is the neighborhood association for the residents in the Macon Historic District.

Yes, all of these homes have had many owners down through the generations.? Just walking inside any one of these homes,? you can feel the whisperings of the past all around you.

The first house on the tour is a Classical Revival house built back in 1905.? The house had many owners through the years.

The current owners have chosen traditional decorations, and a huge Christmas tree filled with ornaments collected by their family, and hand-made lovingly by their children.

?Living Room

?Dining Room

?Kitchen

I thought this was such a simple and good idea.? In preparation for the candlelight portion of the tour later as evening approached,? there were Mason jars with candles inside,? ready to light......What a simple, easy and good idea!
The next home is a Queen Anne house built on a solid granite foundation back in 1875.? The original owner was a Macon railroad official.
?

One of the many Nativity scenes on display in the home.

The walls are decorated with art by local artists.

The piano in the below photo was used by a Macon native and singer Otis Redding, who was very popular in the mid 60's

The next home on the Christmas Tour of Homes was what they call "The Crisco House."? This house is a Beaux Arts designed home, built in 1901.? The original owner of this home was the inventor of Crisco Oil, and of course he made a fortune.? He went on to be an executive in the very successful Proctor and Gamble Company.

As you walk in the front door this is the staircase you see from the foyer.

This elaborate staircase was fabricated in Chicago and shipped by rail to Macon in three pieces.

How about that beautiful fireplace at mid-level, along with two huge windows, and then you can continue on up the rest of the stairway on either side.

?Off to the left of the entrance hall is this sitting room or living room.

The house interior includes oak paneling, pocket doors and wooden curved walls.

?Off to the right of the entrance hall is the dining room.? You can see the wooden curved wall to the right in this photo below.

Family room.

?Below is a later photo of The Crisco House during the candlelight portion of the tour.

The next home on tour is called the Wiley - Lawton, Miller, Gerhardt House.? Those are the names of all the previous owners of the home.? This home was built in 1850 and had many design changes.? It is now referred to as a Queen Anne style house.

This next home is a Victorian style home built in 1880.? This home has had multiple owners and has been passed down from generation to generation.?

Each fireplace in the home has cast iron mantels.

Our tour booklet told us that a part of this home is featured in the upcoming movie "42," the story of Jackie Robinson that was recently filmed in Macon.
The current owners have furnished their home with family heirlooms and artwork as well as antiques acquired through the years.
In the below photo this beautiful Christmas tree in the formal parlor is decorated with hand-painted ceramic ornaments made by a family member,? plus handmade items from the owner's childhood.
This was quite a long tour,? so I am going to separate into Part 1 and then Part 2.?? Come on along with us later for part two,? if you would like to see the rest of the tour.

Hope you are having a wonderful Christmas week with, as a friend of mine would say,? "Merry Happy Days" wherever you may be.

Rush to buy armored backpacks, guns after shooting

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) ? When Ken Larson's 1-year-old son starts school in a few years, he'll be carrying an armored backpack.

After the Connecticut school shooting, Larson and his wife have decided to buy him one just to be safe. Larson already owns one himself that he takes with him when he goes to the movies.

"It's a no brainer. My son's life is invaluable," said Larson, 41, of Denver. "If I can get him a backpack for $200 that makes him safer, I don't even have to think about that."

The reaction to the deadly Connecticut school shooting can be seen at gun stores and self-defense retailers across the nation, with anxious parents buying armored backpacks for children and firearms enthusiasts stocking up on semi-automatic rifles in anticipation of tighter gun control measures.

A spike in gun sales is common after a mass shooting, but the latest rampage has generated record sales in some states, particularly of assault weapons similar to the AR-15 rifle the gunman used Friday in an attack on Sandy Hook Elementary School that killed 26 people, including 20 children.

Colorado set a single-day record for gun background check requests the day after the shootings, while Nevada saw more checks in the two days that followed than any other weekend this year. Records were also set in Tennessee, California and Virginia, among others.

Some gun shop owners stopped selling the remaining stock of their assault weapons, anticipating only more interest and value after President Barack Obama on Wednesday instructed his administration to create concrete proposals to reduce gun violence.

Robert Akers, a Rapid City, S.D., gun seller who specializes in military-style weapons, said the rush of customers had transformed his Rapid Fire Firearms store into a "madhouse" and that he's not actively selling the guns and has turned off his phone.

"The price is only going to go up higher," he said.

There was also an unusual increase in sales for armored backpacks designed to shield children caught in shootings, according to three companies that make them.

The armor inserts fit into the back panel of a child's backpack, and sell for up to $400, depending on the retailer. The armor is designed to stop bullets from handguns, not assault weapons like the one used in the shooting at the Newtown, Conn., school.

Still, the manufacturers and some parents say that while they don't guarantee children won't be killed, they could be useful as shields.

Some experts, however, say sending children to school in armored backpacks is not a healthy response to fear about mass shootings. Anne Marie Albano, psychiatry director at Columbia University's Clinic for Anxiety and Related Disorders, said parents should convey calmness, not anxiety.

"This is not serving to keep children safe," she said. "This is serving to increase their fear and their suspicion of their peers."

At Amendment II in Salt Lake City, sales of its children's backpacks and armored inserts have increased, with 200 purchase requests Wednesday alone.

"The incident last week highlights the need to protect our children," said co-owner Derek Williams. "We didn't get in this business to do this. But the fact is that our armor can help children just as it can help soldiers."

Kerry Clark, president of Texas-based Backpackshield.com, began making the backpacks after the deadly mass shooting at Virginia Tech in 2007. Clark said he sold 15 backpacks Wednesday. Prior to Friday's shooting, he said, the company would sometimes go an entire month and just sell one.

"It's the busiest I've seen it in my life," he said.

Bullet Blocker, a Massachusetts-based company that sells the backpack armor, declined to provide sales numbers but noted that recent sales were substantially greater than normal.

Sales of assault weapons also were on the rise.

Austin Cook, general manager of Hoover Tactical Firearms in suburban Birmingham, Ala., said the spike in sales since Friday's shootings has been so intense that federal background checks that typically take five minutes or less are now taking up to an hour.

Cook said about 50 people were waiting in line for his store to open the morning after the shootings, and that he's since sold nearly all of his assault weapons. Now, he's trying to find more distributors.

"I can't keep them in the store," Cook said.

In Pittsburgh, Dick's Sporting Goods said it was suspending sales of modern rifles nationwide because of the shooting. The company also said it's removing all guns from display at its store closest to Newtown.

Aaron Byrd, co-owner of Patriot Shooting Sports in Youngsville, N.C., is sold out of AR-15 rifles, ammo for those types of guns and high-capacity magazines.

"Things have been crazy the past couple of days. A lot of people have been coming in looking to purchase semiautomatic rifles. They're worried that the government's going to ban semiautomatic rifles and high-capacity magazines, so they've been coming in looking for those," he said.

He added, "I think it is a knee-jerk reaction by both parties ? both the government and the citizens."

Amazing Payday Loan Tips That Really Work - Best Stock Market ...

If you?re experiencing money problems, if could feel as if you don?t have anyone out there to help you. You might think you are all alone in this world. There is payday loans that can help you out in a bind. Though before applying for one, you need to read this article to learn a lot of tips about these loans.

Look around for the lowest interest rate. There are payday loan companies you can visit, but you can also find some online. These places all want to get your business based on prices. A few payday lenders will reduce the fees for those borrowing for the first time. Check all your options before settling on a lender.

Most cash advance loans must be repaid within two weeks. If something unexpected occurs, and you aren?t able to pay back the loan in time, you may have options. Most companies allow you to extend your repayment date, however they add additional fees.

Cash Advances

A lot of companies that offer cash advances make sure their agreements protect them, the lender, in case of a dispute. Cash advances are not discharged due to bankruptcy. Their contracts also contain indemnification or forced arbitration clauses that limit a borrower?s ability to sue in court.

Remember that a payday loan is just that?a loan that you should be able to repay on your payday. You don?t want to use the rollover option unless you absolutely have to. This will help you avoid excessive costs that will quickly add up and keep you in debt longer.

When you need cash, you shouldn?t rely soleley on a payday loan. Everybody needs help sometimes, but don?t make it a habit. Look for a better way to get yourself out of debt, then start putting money away for emergencies and expenses.

With any payday loan you look at, you?ll want to give careful consideration to the interest rate it offers. Companies vary. Some are forthcoming about interest. Others are secretive. Make sure you know how much interest you will be paying in order to decide whether the loan is right for you.

Personal Information

Always be careful with any personal information you give out whenever you apply for cash advances. Personal information, such as social security numbers, is generally needed for these loans, but sometimes scam artists will give your info to outside parties. Verify that the company has a legitimate privacy policy and is a reputable lender.

The amount of money you receive from a payday loan must be under a certain amount. This amount is set by the state you live in. Otherwise, your loan may not be legal. For example, California cash advance loans may not exceed $255. If you?re offered $400, that offer came from an unlicensed lender.

Payday Loan

A payday loan is not something to casually consider and then leap into. Interest rates are far higher than credit card penalty rates. For example, on a $500 loan, you?ll likely pay $75 in interest. Instead of suffering for using a payday loan uselessly, use one only when you need it most.

Due to the numerous payday loan companies out there, it?s vital that you thoroughly research your options prior to selecting one. A good place to start researching lenders in your area is the Better Business Bureau. Complaints reported to the Better Business Bureau will be listed on the Bureau?s website.

Don?t pick out a payday loan provider without doing some comparison shopping. Certain companies have a smaller interest rates and some may even waive the fee you would have to pay for getting the loan. One place may be able to fund the loan within an hour, or you may wait for days at another. If you review various loan programs, you are sure to find a loan that best fits your needs.

By doing everything the right way, you will surely have a simpler experience when dealing with cash advances. You will know how to choose a good company, what amount you should ask for, and when to pay it off so that you can go forward with your life. Schools Win Latest Legal Clashes Over Academic Issues - Higher ...

by Eric FreedmanRichard Matsch

U.S. District Judge Richard Matsch threw out the Title VII sex discrimination suit against Metropolitan State.

New court rulings in Texas and Colorado have reinforced the principle that judges should be reluctant to meddle with academic decisions by colleges and universities.

In one case, a judge held that Texas Southern University did not violate the federal due process rights of two first-year law students who flunked out for failing to maintain the required 2.0 minimum GPA.

?Federal courts disfavor claims that require judges to second-guess judgments about the academic quality of a student?s work,? the ruling said.

And, in the other case, a judge said a Metropolitan State University dean?s opposition to the promotion of a female professor may have been based on his own gender bias but found insufficient evidence that sex bias also motivated the Faculty Senate, provost, vice president of academic affairs and president to reject the promotion.

?The decisions made in academia are subject to some deference because they are exercises in professional judgment,? the decision said.

The TSU case was filed by Jonathan Chan and Karla Ford, who received D and D- grades in a contract law course. On their final exam, each answered only one of eight questions correctly.

As a result, both had GPAs below the minimum, so the Thurgood Marshall School of Law dismissed them at the end of the spring 2011 semester. The Academic Standards Committee held brief review hearings at the two students? request but denied their petitions for grade changes.

They then sued for damages and reinstatement.

U.S. District Judge Lee Rosenthal rejected their claims that the professor arbitrarily graded one of their exams and that the law school failed to provide a valid appeals process and wrongfully denied their grade-change request.

In his decision, Rosenthal said that, although the plaintiffs ?challenge the policy of curving grades as inherently arbitrary, they do not challenge the academic reason for TSU?s policy: to dismiss students who do not show promise for success in future studies, on the bar exam or in legal practice.?

Rosenthal also cited the availability of the petition and hearing process, the use of anonymous examination numbers and the fact that the professor followed accepted academic norms in grading.

The decision allows Chan and Ford to pursue claims in state court for emotional distress and breach of contract if they wish. However, Rosenthal noted that courts across the United States have rejected attempts to frame ?a purely academic failure by a student in a professional school? as breach of contract.

The Metropolitan State decision came in the case of Dr. Elizabeth Frederick, who was hired as a tenure-track assistant professor of management in the School of Business in 1987. She became an associate professor in 1992 and chaired the department in 2003-04.

As a member of the school?s Faculty Salary Equity and Parity Task Force in 2004, there were ?tensions? between herself and then-Dean John Cochran, the decision said, and a ?developing adversarial relationship? led her to resign as department chair.

Frederick?s initial application for promotion to full professor in 2006 received a favorable review from the departmental committee but was rejected by the Business School?s committee, Cochran and higher-level administrators. She reapplied in 2007, again with support from her department, but not from the chair, dean and other officials.

U.S. District Judge Richard Matsch of Denver threw out her Title VII sex discrimination suit against the university.

?There is ample evidence to support a finding that Dean Cochran?s opposition to Dr. Frederick?s application for promotion was substantially motivated by gender bias, perceiving her as an aggressive woman advocating for equality,? Matsch said. ?She contends that this animus affected the other levels of review, making her employer liable.?

However, the judge continued, ?The evidence does not support that contention,? saying that, even if Cochran?s views influenced the Business School committee, there is no proof that it caused the other rejections.

Frederick?s lawyer, David Lane of Denver, said his client, who remains on the faculty, was seeking ?damages and a fair shot at promotion.? She has not decided yet whether to appeal, he said.

The university has asked the judge to award it $20,815 in legal costs.

Beyond the Internet: Week 48 Teachers | Family history across the ...

Beyond the Internet

Beyond the Internet

This week I?m belatedly writing Week 48 in my?Beyond the Internet?series in which I explore the sources of information beyond our computer screens and this week?s topic is Occupations ? Teachers.

I wrote a few posts early in the year about school admissions and other school records, which will obviously be of relevance if you have teaching ancestors.

However you?re probably looking for more personal information about their careers.

I have no teachers in my family tree but Mr Cassmob?s is fairly littered with them so much of the information I?ve acquired has come from them. Some are his immediate ancestors, one is our daughter, and others go back to the early-mid 19th century.

Where to look

The first port of call will be the relevant archive for the area where they taught.

If they were in a religious school, you may have to approach the school or religious order they worked for (not so easy, sometimes).

I?d also look at reference libraries to see if there?s more general information about their records.

?teacherSo what might you find about your teaching ancestors?

?Their inspection reports: Remember those school visits when we thought the inspector was only assessing us, but in reality was probably mainly interested in the teacher, and whether they?d taught the necessary curriculum to the right standard. They must have been intimidating for the teachers as 50 years later we met a lady in Alotau who remembered her mother being inspected by Mr Cassmob?s father (who could do intimidating quite well in his professional role).

teacher 2Their other roles in the community: ?for example my mother-in-law was the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages in her rural Victorian community when she was only 20 or so. As a family historian you have to love information like that!

Their academic training: whether they had teachers? college training, university, or were thrown in largely at the deep end to sink or swim.

Their history in schools: For example: my in-laws were both teachers and both were required to establish small bush schools in rural Victoria with absolutely minimal training. In their specific case this experience was no doubt invaluable as they launched and taught at new schools in Papua New Guinea. ?Did your ancestors teach in large urban schools, small multi-class schools or even one-teacher schools? Who was in their class? Did their own children have to call them ?Mrs Cass? in the classroom, for example.

Books: You may find some reference to your teaching ancestors in books relating to the areas where they taught, or specialised books on education.

?Gazettes:?Government and Education?Their postings may feature in the various gazettes ?check them out. (I?m indebted to Rosemary Kopittke who alerted me to the education gazettes last year). Goulds have a range of the Queensland Education Gazettes which you can see here.

Apple on DeskIf you have teachers in your tree I hope these tips will help you learn a little more about them. If you have used other records please do share with us via the comments or your own blog so we can all learn.

Teachers really are pivotal to the development of a community?s children, a debt we all owe them, as they work so hard to educate and care for their students. In the past week we?ve also seen their heroism as they protected children, sometimes with their own lives.

So let?s all say a huge ?thank you? to the teachers who?ve helped form us into who we are today.?

Did you have a pivotal teacher: if so who was it??

The teaching images are from Microsoft clipart.

Billi Jo Smallwood Sentence: 25 Years For Arson That Killed 2 Children In Kentucky

LOUISVILLE, Ky. ? A sobbing mother was sentenced Thursday to 25 years in prison for setting fire to her home and killing two of her children at Fort Campbell, in what prosecutors described as a scheme to escape a rocky marriage and collect on her soldier husband's life insurance policy.

In a tearful plea for leniency, 39-year-old Billi Jo Smallwood showed photo albums and her son's toy chest while professing her innocence to a crime that could have put her in prison for the rest of her life.

"Those are my children, my babies that grew inside of me," she told U.S. District Judge Thomas B. Russell. "I love them so much."

Family, friends and even her jail guards portrayed her as caring, selfless and deeply religious during nearly an hour of testimonials in support of Smallwood, who wept during many of the presentations.

Assistant U.S. Attorney James R. Lesousky Jr. described Smallwood's actions as "premeditated and devious" that justified a life sentence.

"She turned her back on those children, and when she did so, she lost two of them," he said.

Smallwood was convicted by a federal jury in Paducah of maliciously setting fire to the two-story housing unit in 2007 while her children slept inside. Prosecutors argued her intent was to kill her husband and cash in his $400,000 insurance policy.

She was convicted of one count of malicious damage and destruction by fire to property owned by the United States, resulting in the two deaths on the Army post straddling the Kentucky-Tennessee border.

The blaze killed 9-year-old Sam Fagan and 2-year-old Rebekah Smallwood.

Smallwood's husband, Wayne Smallwood, a Fort Campbell soldier at the time, and their young daughter survived.

Russell mentioned the "powerful and sincere" remarks by Smallwood's defenders while handing down the sentence. Russell also ordered Smallwood to pay $209,000 in restitution for damage caused by the blaze.

Evidence presented at trial indicated she purchased a gasoline container about 12 hours before the fire was set. Remnants of the container were found by investigators in the first-floor dining room, where gasoline had been poured and ignited.

Prosecutors also pointed to evidence showing Smallwood fabricated her claim that she received a threatening phone call meant for her husband on the eve of the fire. Her intent, they said, was to divert attention from herself as a suspect.

"The telephone call never happened," Lesousky said Thursday. "It was part of her cover up."

Smallwood said she wasn't the person portrayed by prosecutors.

She talked of her devotion to her husband and of being thrilled when she found out she was pregnant with her oldest child. She talked about the children in personal terms while describing scrapbook photos.

Her mother and her aunt offered tearful statements asking for leniency.

Brenda Napper, a sergeant at the Marion County Detention Center, where Smallwood has been held, said she believes Smallwood's claim of innocence. Napper said it's the first time she's ever felt an inmate was innocent.

Mitchell Embry, a volunteer chaplain who has gotten to know Smallwood during her incarceration, called her "the most faithful, deep-thinking, spiritual person I've been around."

Defense attorney Laura Wyrosdick declined to say whether Smallwood will appeal.

Smallwood's trial had been delayed several times over evidentiary issues and appeals.

Reach Your Goals With An Orange County Personal Trainer!

Personal trainers are an amazing asset. These are individuals who may have been exactly where most people are where they feel incredibly unhealthy and lacking both nutrition and exercise and decided they?d had enough. They put themselves through nutrition classes and have many years of experience in what they are trying to help you achieve. The motivational persona of a good personal trainer is a perfect example to you of where your going. You get to see someone who did it and let them guide you to the same place.

Personal trainers are often found in a variety of places. You can see them in most public and private Gyms both working at that Gym or helping someone who goes to that particular gym. You can hire personal trainers to freelance wherever you want to train, not just at the facility. Orange County Personal trainers are everywhere and glad to help you get in shape while you help them put food on their table. It?s actually inspirational to have a personal trainer. They know what your going to try before you try it and know ways to stop you from demotivating yourself!

If you look like your getting tired or losing motivation they will push you a little bit harder then let you rest. They build up your confidence but also push you to push yourself so you reach your goals faster and more permanently. Once you get in shape you can maintain your trainer to keep you going or you can go off on your own and continue what you learned in ?fitness school?.

You can also alternatively join a boot camp where you can join a group of people for an intensive 30 days training program. You learn a great deal and if your having trouble getting motivated and want a more intensive program that is the way to go. Personal trainers are like a fitness boot camp that comes to you and is a private session. If your not comfortable in a group setting personal trainers are the way to go. Either way, if you put in the work for a short 30 days you?ll see incredible changes!

JVC launches five Everio camcorders in Japan, two with Android remote control

JVC occasionally drops hints as to what we'll see at CES through launches in Japan late in the year; if that's true with its new Everio camcorder launch, we'll face a small avalanche in Las Vegas. Five models are shipping in late December that include two with remote control: WiFi on the 16GB GZ-EX350 and 32GB GZ-EX370 lets a nearby Android phone or tablet steer the camera from a distance, and the camera itself can wirelessly back up its footage as well as share media through WiFi Direct. Springing for one of these or the strictly-offline GZ-E325 (8GB) and GZ-E345 (16GB) cameras will still net you a just-the-highlights playback mode that looks for smiles and tagged scenes. While the entry-level GZ-E320 misses out on the highlight mode, all five models share a 40X optical zoom, 1080p shooting from a BSI CMOS sensor, an SDXC card slot and a 3-inch touchscreen for previewing any would-be masterpieces. Although JVC hasn't mentioned any US plans, we wouldn't be surprised to see at least one or two of the new Everios cross the Pacific.

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) ? The Kansas City Royals have slowly and methodically allowed their top prospects to climb through their farm system in recent years, piecing together a team they believe can compete in the wide-open American League Central.

All that's been missing has been the pitching.

They dipped into the farm system to solve that problem, too.

The Royals sent top prospects Wil Myers and Jake Odorizzi along with two other minor leaguers to the Tampa Bay Rays on Sunday night for former All-Star James Shields and fellow right-hander Wade Davis, making an aggressive move to bolster a rotation that was one of the worst in the major leagues last season.

"We have to start winning games at the major league level, and the way you develop a winning culture is by winning major league games," Royals general manager Dayton Moore said. "It's time for us to start winning at the major league level."

Kansas City, which hasn't had a winning season since 2003, has long had one of the best farm systems in baseball, and slowly the cream has risen to the big league level ? first baseman Eric Hosmer, shortstop Alcides Escobar, third baseman Mike Moustakas and catcher Salvador Perez form a fine nucleus. But there's been a dearth of starting pitching for years, and that's what Moore and the rest of the front office have been trying to fix this offseason.

He's already re-signed Jeremy Guthrie to a $25 million, three-year deal, and took on former All-Star Ervin Santana and $12 million of his contract from the Angels. But the trade for Shields and Davis is Moore's most aggressive move yet, giving Kansas City the ace it has been lacking since trading away Zack Greinke, along with another piece that could fit in the rotation or the bullpen.

"When you can acquire a pitcher like James Shields and Wade Davis, we have to do it, because that's what we've committed to our team ? we've committed to our organization," Moore said. "It's important that we start winning games."

Along with giving up Myers, an outfielder widely voted the minor leagues' top player last season, the Royals also traded away Odorizzi, a talented right-hander who should soon compete for a spot in the Rays' rotation. Left-hander Mike Montgomery and third baseman Patrick Leonard also are headed to the Rays, while the Royals will receive a player to be named or cash.

"We're constantly working to balance the present and the future, and always trying to thread the needle," Rays executive vice president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman said. "As an organization we rely more on the contributions of our young players basically than anyone else in baseball, and with this trade we're hoping to replenish our system and add a lot of players we feel can help us sustain this run of success that we've had for the last five years."

Shields, who turns 31 this month, has been a stalwart in the Tampa Bay rotation the past seven seasons. He was an All-Star two years ago, when he went 16-12 with a 2.82 ERA and finished third in the American League Cy Young Award voting, and was 15-10 with a 3.52 ERA in 33 starts last season, when he pitched 227 2-3 innings ? his sixth consecutive year of at least 200 innings pitched.

The only other pitchers to log at least 200 innings in six straight seasons are the Jays' Mark Buehrle, San Francisco's Matt Cain, Yankees left-hander CC Sabathia and the Tigers ace Justin Verlander.

"If you're going to win consistently in the major leagues, you're going to need a rotation that gives you innings, competes, helps you win," Moore said. "That's what our goal is, to put together a very good rotation. We feel we've done that."

Shields is due to receive $10.5 million this season. He has a club option for $12 million in 2014 with a $1 million buyout.

The Royals suddenly have a glut of starting pitchers with Shields, Santana and Guthrie joined by Bruce Chen and Luis Mendoza, who are expected back from last year. Luke Hochevar is eligible for arbitration, while Danny Duffy and Felipe Paulino will return at some point during the middle of the season after having Tommy John surgery.

Davis also could be thrown into the mix.

The right-hander started 64 games for Tampa Bay from 2009-11, but he was shuttled to the bullpen last season when the Rays had an abundance of starters. He flourished as a reliever, going 3-0 with a 2.43 ERA, creating some flexibility for him in Kansas City.

Davis is due to make $2.8 million this season and $4.8 million in 2014, with the Royals holding options on the next three years.

The jewel of the deal for Tampa Bay is undoubtedly Myers, who turns 22 on Monday.

The power-hitting outfielder batted .314 with 37 homers and 109 RBIs in 134 games at Northwest Arkansas and Triple-A Omaha, and eventually could help provide some protection in the batting order for Rays star Evan Longoria. Myers showed what he could do during the All-Star Futures Game hosted by Kansas City, when he had a pair of hits and drove in three runs at Kauffman Stadium.

He'll finally get a chance to prove it at the major league level at Tropicana Field.

Odorizzi was 15-5 with a 3.03 ERA for Northwest Arkansas and Omaha, and made two late-season starts for Kansas City, going 0-1 with a 4.91 ERA in 7 1-3 innings. Montgomery was once considered one of the Royals' top prospects, but his stock slid last season, when he went 5-13 with a 6.07 ERA last season while getting demoted from Omaha to Northwest Arkansas.

Leonard hit .251 with 14 homers and 46 RBIs in 62 games for short-season Burlington.

"We're excited to add these guys, anxious to get to know them beyond the information we have on them," Friedman said. "I think it's very possible that Wil Myers and Jake Odorizzi will help us win games in 2013, and Mike Montgomery as well."

Things Don't Look Good for Hugo Chavez

The normally upbeat Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez is taking his latest cancer diagnosis noticeably more serious than he did the last one. All signs are pointing to his health failing him very, very soon.?

RELATED: Venezuela Calls Dan Rather a Necrophiliac

So, yeah, Chavez's cancer is back. Which is a pretty big deal considering he's been fighting cancer with treatments in Cuba for almost a year now. He spent the summer assuring people he would be okay on time for the fall elections, and it seemed like he was. As far as we knew his radiotherapy was effective. He even won a new term as President! But now it's back, so the President has to return to Cuba for radiotherapy, and the normally defiant in the face of cancer Chavez is particularly somber in the face of this latest diagnosis.

RELATED: Hugo Chavez Wants to Rule Venezuela Until 2031

Chavez went so far as to name his vice-president Nicolas Maduro his heir in case "something happened" before his inauguration on January 10.?"You choose Maduro as president of the republic," Chavez said on national television. "I am asking you this from all my heart." He has to return to Cuba for surgery as soon as possible, he said.?

RELATED: China Allows Newspapers to Like Lady Gaga

But it won't matter, as the AFP explains, if he dies before his?inauguration:?

Under the Venezuelan constitution, if the new president is incapacitated before inauguration, which is scheduled for January 10, new elections must be called in 30 days. The parliamentary speaker must then take charge until a new president is elected.

Chavez laughed in the face of his last diagnosis, and acted like it wasn't a big deal. This time he's admitting the pain is, "not insignificant." Let's hope he doesn't try and blame the U.S. again.?
