How to get More Battery Life out of your Galaxy Nexus

?

We all know our beloved Android phones are not battery friendly, and we try our best to conserve the battery to at least get us through the dreaded work day. Extended batteries, toggles, and battery saver apps can also help with the life of your battery. Even though Ice Cream Sandwich has impressive battery life with all the features it has, there is still a simple method you can use to make it even better.

For those of you that were lucky to get a Samsung Galaxy Nexus, here is a simple little thing you can do to help increase your battery?s life.?TURNING?OFF YOUR 4G. Easy right? Lets face?facts. It is going to take a while for the 4G LTE to get into every nook and cranny of the Earth?s plain, and if you live in a city that does not have 4G or sometimes gets 4G, your phone is wasting power scanning for that 4G signal. So lets turn that scanning off. It is as simple as, Settings>More?>Mobile Networks>and?turning it from LTE/CDMA to just CDMA.?You will now remain with constant 3G and your phone will save that power it was using trying to find 4G.

Why would you want to turn off that awesome 4G though? I am not saying just remain on 3G the whole day, just for those times where you are not really using your phone. You can also look in the market to see if there is a special toggle for this?method, so instead of going through your settings you can place the toggle on your home screen and tap it once for it to bring you right to the preferred network window. This will make it easier for you to go back and forth between 3G and 4G.

A lot of you probably already knew this little trick. I use this method with my phone on T-Mobile?s network, where I turn the HSPA+ off when I am not really using my phone for downloading or browsing through apps. It helps the battery ?a ton. This method especially will help your Galaxy Nexus out since Big Red is having constant problems these days, keeping their 4G LTE from cutting out. Silly Verizon and their awesome broadband service that is to powerful for even them to handle. Give it a shot and see if it helps you out.

NH Fugitive Shot, Killed In Florida

POSTED: 5:24 pm EST December 27, 2011
UPDATED: 11:45 pm EST December 27, 2011

A fugitive from New Hampshire was shot and killed Tuesday in a shootout with law enforcement authorities in Florida. The U.S. Marshals Service said 22-year-old Joseph Cleary was located in Cape Coral, but when authorities tried to arrest him, he brandished a gun. A deputy sheriff assigned to the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force shot Cleary in an exchange of gunfire, the department said.No law enforcement officers were injured.Officials said Cleary managed to elude officers three times in December and had taken a moving van down to Florida when authorities found him.Cape Coral residents living near where the showdown happened said officers came to their doors Tuesday morning and told them to stay inside. Not long after that, there was an exchange of gunfire."He had violated the terms of his bail agreement, and Strafford County attorney Tom Velarde had filed a motion with the Strafford County Superior Court for his bail to be revoked and it was granted,? Strafford County Sheriff?s Office Capt. Joseph DiGregorio said.Officials said Cleary barricaded himself in a room, and then came out and was killed in an exchange of gunfire with officers."They approached the house and actually saw Mr. Cleary through the window, and when they did they ordered Mr. Cleary to come out of the house, which he did not, and then he actually went deeper into the house," U.S. Marshal David Cargill said. "If Mr. Cleary had just surrendered, he would have been taken into custody and things would have been OK."Investigators said it doesn't appear Cleary knew anybody in Florida.Reports indicate he had rented a house and officers said it looked like he was just moving to get away from local troubles and avoid justice in New Hampshire.Cleary was wanted for bail and probation violations related to a first-degree assault conviction in 2006 in Barrington, according to the Marshals Service.Cleary was convicted of stabbing a good Samaritan in the knee and in the face when that man intervened after Cleary came at a mother and her 7-year-old daughter with a boat oar. The mother said Cleary threatened them as they were riding horses, and she motioned for Cleary to slow down as he sped past them.

Willoughby United Methodist Church welcomes community for Christmas dinner (with video)

Maribeth Joeright/MJoeright@News-Herald.com

Helen Andraitis, right, of Willoughby gets a big helping of sliced apples from Bridget Douglas, 9, of Willoughby during the Willoughby United Methodist Church Christmas dinner Sunday.

Thanks to some last-minute work by members of the Willoughby United Methodist Church, Christmas Day was a little brighter for some Lake County residents.

The church hosted a community dinner Sunday afternoon. With plenty of volunteers and community members ? not to mention food ? at the event, it's hard to believe just two weeks ago it wasn't even planned.

Kim Hayes, who co-chaired the event alongside Marty Kreger, said it was the Rev. Don Perks who asked the church council to pray about doing something on Christmas for those in need.

While she knew it would be a challenge to pull the dinner together in a matter of days, especially over the holidays, the council nonetheless agreed it was something that should be done.

"We have people from the community who were alone for the holidays, who didn't have an opportunity or couldn't afford to make dinner, so we opened our doors," Hayes said. "Everybody felt this was something we were being called to do."

The dinner itself ? a full, traditional holiday meal with ham, potatoes, green beans and plenty of Christmas cookies ? was a blessing for friends Darlene Wilson and Jean Woods.

The ladies said they'd heard about the meal and came to check it out. Wilson, who lives in Willoughby, said it was one of the best meals she'd had in some time. The hard work of the UMC volunteers wasn't lost on her.

"These people basically gave up their Christmas, so we could have one," Wilson said.

Aside from the food, the sense of community and family was much appreciated by Woods, who lives in Eastlake. Continued...

"I felt at home; everyone was very welcoming," Woods said. "I'm glad they had some room in the inn for us."

There was more than enough room, and food, for everyone. By the time the meal ended, UMC volunteers were asking community members to take food home with them.

With one year now under its belt, the church hopes the community Christmas dinner will grow into a yearly tradition.

"We had an OK-sized crowd," Hayes said. "We hope this becomes an annual thing and continues to expand and grow to be even better in the future."

Texas gunman was dressed as Santa, police say

A man suspected of opening fire on a family Christmas celebration outside Dallas was dressed in a Santa Claus suit when he killed six people and then himself, police said on Monday.

Authorities continued their search for clues in Grapevine, a Dallas suburb dubbed the ?Christmas Capital of Texas,? to explain the Sunday murder-suicide rampage that left seven shot dead among unwrapped holiday presents.

More related to this story

The dead ? four women and three men between the ages of 15 and 58 ? were found on Sunday morning in an apartment living-room by police answering a voiceless 911 emergency call, authorities said.

?By all appearances, they?re all part of the same family,? said Sergeant Robert Eberling of the Grapevine police department, adding that some were related through marriage.

Two pistols were recovered from the home, said Sgt. Eberling, who called it a ?gruesome crime scene? and the worst outburst of gun violence in the town?s history.

Authorities were waiting on autopsy reports before releasing identities, a potential motive and details on what exactly happened inside the home, Sgt. Eberling said.

?We have a petty good idea who these folks were, and we?re trying to work through contacting other family members so we can better piece together what took place and why it took place,? he said.

Sgt. Eberling said the suspected shooter was dressed in a Santa Claus suit but gave no further details.

The 911 caller never spoke to police, and officers did not see the telephone when they arrived, officials said. Sgt. Eberling said he believed police had to kick in the door to enter. No neighbours reported hearing gunshots, he said.

Sgt. Eberling said the victims appeared to have just opened Christmas presents when the shooting started, and there was no sign of forced entry or a struggle.

Circumstances of the shooting remained sketchy, but Sgt. Eberling said it appeared as though the bloodbath unfolded during a family holiday celebration.

No one was found alive by police arriving at the home, he said.

A community of about 46,000 people some 32 kilometres northwest of downtown Dallas, Grapevine is known for its wine-tasting salons and was proclaimed by the state Senate as the ?Christmas Capital of Texas? for its abundance of annual holiday-season events.

?This is obviously a terrible tragedy,? Mayor William Tate said on Sunday night in a statement.

?The fact that it happened on Christmas makes it even more tragic.?

Small monkey groups may win territorial disputes against larger groups because some members of the larger, invading groups avoid aggressive encounters. In a new report published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Margaret Crofoot and Ian Gilby of the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute and the Max Planck Institute of Ornithology show that individual monkeys that don't participate in conflicts prevent large groups from achieving their competitive potential.

The authors used recorded vocalizations to simulate territorial invasions into the ranges of wild white-faced capuchin monkey groups at the Smithsonian reasearch station on Barro Colorado Island in Panama. Monkeys responded more vigorously to territorial challenges near the center of their territories and were more likely to flee in encounters near the borders.

Defection by members of larger groups was more common than defection by members of smaller groups. Groups that outnumbered their opponents could convert their numerical superiority to a competitive advantage when defending the center of their own range against neighboring intruders, but failed to do so when they attempted to invade the ranges of their neighbors, because more individuals in large groups chose not to participate. According to the authors, these behavior patterns even the balance of power among groups and create a 'home-field advantage' which may explain how large and small groups are able to coexist.

Stocks get boost from US economy hopes (AP)

LONDON ? Global stocks advanced Friday on further signs the U.S. economy is improving, but trading activity was muted as the traditional holiday slowdown began in earnest.

Investors have taken heart from figures Thursday showing that the number of initial jobless claims in the U.S. unexpectedly fell 4,000 last week to 364,000, the lowest level since April 2008. A fairly upbeat U.S. consumer confidence survey from the University of Michigan helped sustain the positive sentiment before the European close.

The figures provided further evidence that the U.S. economy, the world's largest, has got through its soft patch earlier this year and may be poised for stronger-than-anticipated growth in the fourth quarter.

"The interesting point in these claims data is that they continue to signal that the financial market ructions that kicked-off in late July this year have not made a meaningful impact on the U.S. real economy," said Adrian Foster, an analyst at Rabobank International.

The news that Italian Premier Mario Monti easily won a vote of confidence in the Senate on Thursday has also cheered investors, as it signaled parliamentary approval of the government's euro30 billion ($39 billion) package of tax hikes and pension changes.

The austerity package is intended to save the country from financial disaster and follows rising concerns in the markets that Italy will find it difficult to pay off its massive debts, which stand at around euro1.9 trillion ($2.5 trillion).

"A combination of Italian PM Monti's success in gaining approval for his austerity package and continuing economic progress in the U.S. is the catalyst for the markets drive at present," said Jordan Lambert, a trader at Spreadex.

In Europe, Germany's DAX rose 0.4 percent to 5,873 while the CAC-40 in France was 1.1 percent higher at 3,105. The FTSE 100 index of leading British shares, which only traded for a half day, closed up 1 percent at 5,512.70.

Trading volumes were low as many investors take vacations over Christmas and New Year. Many markets close early on Friday and most are closed Monday for Christmas.

The euro was also fairly solid, trading 0.1 percent higher at $1.3073.

Wall Street was poised for a fairly solid opening ? Dow futures were up 0.5 percent at 12,158 while the broader Standard & Poor's 500 futures rose by the same rate to 1,256.

The last batch of major U.S. economic data will be released before the bell, the highlight likely to be November durable goods orders figures. They are expected to show orders rising 2.2 percent during the month, following two straight monthly falls.

Earlier in Asia, China's benchmark in Shanghai gained 0.9 percent to 2,204.78 and Hong Kong's Hang Seng rose 1.4 percent to 18,629.17. Japan's financial markets were closed for a public holiday.

Oil prices tracked equities higher ? benchmark crude for February delivery was up 35 cents to $99.88 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Murdoch media pays 7 more phone hacking victims (AP)

LONDON ? Rupert Murdoch's News International has paid out settlements to seven more prominent figures in the wake of the phone hacking scandal at its now-shuttered News of the World tabloid.

The company said in a statement Tuesday it had settled claims brought by Princess Diana's former lover James Hewitt, ex-Liberal Democrat lawmaker Mark Oaten, TV presenter Ukrika Jonsson, model Abi Titmuss, and Paul Dadge, who helped rescue victims of the 2005 London transit bombings.

Theatrical agent Michelle Milburn and Calum Best, the son of soccer legend George Best, rounded out the settlement list.

The scandal over phone hacking at the News of the World tabloid boiled over after it emerged that journalists at the paper had routinely hacked into the phones of celebrities, politicians, sports figures and even crime victims.

The now-defunct tabloid has already settled with several prominent figures, including actress Sienna Miller and the family of murdered British schoolgirl Milly Dowler, whose phone was broken into by the paper soon after her disappearance in 2002.

The Dowler case in particular revolted Britons and was instrumental in pushing Prime Minister David Cameron to set up an inquiry into U.K. media ethics, which is still hearing from witnesses.

The terms of the new payments announced Tuesday were not disclosed but they are likely to be substantial. Miller received 100,000 pounds (nearly $157,000) in damages; the Dowlers were awarded 2 million pounds ($3.1 million) plus 1 million pounds ($1.6 million) from Murdoch himself, which was earmarked for charity.

The scandal has hit News International parent company News Corp. hard, most notably by scrapping the company's multibillion-pound bid for full control of satellite broadcaster BSkyB.

Iran says arrests another CIA spy (Reuters)

TEHRAN (Reuters) ? Iranian authorities said on Saturday they had arrested an Iranian caught spying for the United States, the Islamic Republic's latest claim of success in a spying war with Washington.

State TV quoted the Intelligence Ministry as saying the arrested person had received training at U.S. bases in neighboring Afghanistan and Iraq and was meant to feed false information to Iranian intelligence.

"This CIA agent of Iranian nationality began his mission after receiving training in weapons use," the ministry said in a statement quoted on television.

"But he was identified by Iranian intelligence agents and his espionage missions were revealed."

He was supposed to launch his mission from Bagram base in Afghanistan, the intelligence ministry report said, but Iranian intelligence agents helped him enter Iran and later arrested him.

Current and former U.S. officials told Reuters in November that Iran had succeeded in uncovering the identities of several CIA informants.

Iran said in May it had arrested 30 people on suspicion of spying for the United States and last Tuesday 15 people were indicted for spying for Washington and Israel. Spying in Iran can be punishable by death.

On December 4, Iran announced it had downed a U.S. spy plane in the eastern part of the country, near Afghanistan. It has since shown the plane on television and said it is close to cracking its technological secrets.

The United States is leading diplomatic efforts to tighten sanctions on Iran which it accuses of seeking nuclear weapons, a charge Tehran denies. Washington and Israel say they do not rule out making strikes on Iran's nuclear sites.

House Republicans oppose Senate payroll tax bill (Reuters)

WASHINGTON (Reuters) ? House Speaker John Boehner threw into doubt the fate of a popular tax break for workers on Sunday, saying he and his fellow House Republicans oppose the two-month extension backed by the Senate and want something longer passed before the holiday break.

Boehner said on NBC's "Meet the Press" program he wants a one-year extension of the reduced rate for U.S. payroll tax paid by workers to fund Social Security.

"It's pretty clear that I and our members oppose the Senate bill. It's only for two months," Boehner said, adding this was "kicking the can down the road."

The Senate passed a two-month extension on Saturday but Boehner said he wanted to work out differences with the Senate before the end of the year, when the tax cut expires.

The biggest sticking point for a year-long extension is how to cover the $120 billion in lost revenue. Republicans are demanding spending cuts to cover the cost and Democrats want to pay for it by closing some tax breaks for the wealthy.

Boehner said Congress should stay in Washington and pass the longer extension before going home for the holiday break.

Beyond a one-year extension, Boehner said House Republicans are demanding reforms to the federal unemployment insurance program to cut the number of weeks for benefits - measures largely opposed by Democrats.

The package also includes a provision to avert a pay cut for doctors treating the elderly on the Medicare healthcare program.

"How can you do tax policy for two months?" Boehner said. "We really do believe it's time for the Senate to work with the House to complete our business for the year. We've got two weeks to get this done. Let's do it the right way."

President Barack Obama, a Democrat, says the lower 4.2 percent payroll tax rate will help boost economic growth. Without congressional action, the rate on the tax workers pay into the Social Security retirement fund will snap back to 6.2 percent.

White House economic adviser Gene Sperling was more optimistic about the prospects for the Senate-passed shorter extension.

"I really think it is very unlikely that the House would disrupt this compromise ... six days before Christmas," Sperling said on CNN's "State of the Union" program on Sunday.

(AP) ? More than a year and a half after prominent civil rights lawyer Gao Zhisheng disappeared, China's government gave the first sign Friday that he is alive, saying he would be sent to prison for three years for violating his probation.

A brief report by the state-run Xinhua News Agency did not answer key questions about Gao ? the condition of his health and his whereabouts now and in the 20 months since he disappeared, presumably at the hands of the authorities.

"Are they sending him to a proper prison? Which prison was he at before? Where were they hiding him?" said Gao's brother, Gao Zhiyi, who has been on a quest to find his sibling.

Gao's wife said from the United States she was still uneasy because of the lack of information.

"When I heard what they said, all I could think was 'Oh, it means he's still alive,'" Geng He said, crying, in a phone interview with The Associated Press.

Charismatic and pugnacious, Gao was a galvanizing figure for the rights movement, advocating constitutional reform and arguing landmark cases to defend property rights and political and religious dissenters. Convicted in 2006 of subversion and sentenced to three years, he was quickly released on probation before being taken away by security agents in 2009 in the first of his forced disappearances that set off an international outcry.

The United States expressed deep disappointment over Friday's announcement, describing Gao's forced disappearance and treatment as a serious human rights concern.

"We're especially concerned about Gao's welfare and whereabouts, including reports that his family has been unable to communicate with him. We reiterate our calls for the Chinese government to immediately release Gao from custody and clarify his whereabouts," spokeswoman Victoria Nuland told reporters in Washington.

The Xinhua report referred to Gao's 2006 subversion conviction and said Beijing's No. 1 Intermediate People's Court found that he "had seriously violated probation rules for a number of times, which led to the court decision to withdraw the probation."

The report did not explain what violations Gao had committed but said his five-year probation was due to expire next Thursday ? timing which legal experts said may have prompted the government to send Gao back to jail. "He would serve his term in prison in the next three years," the report said.

Calls to the No. 1 court and the city's appeals court rang unanswered Friday.

Gao has been held incommunicado in apparent disregard of laws and regulations for all but two months of the last three years. When he emerged from the first 14-month bout in April 2010, he told The Associated Press that he had been shunted between detention centers, farm houses and apartments across north China and repeatedly beaten and abused.

He said he had been hooded several times. His captors made him sit motionless for up to 16 hours and threatened to kill him and dump his body in a river.

"'You must forget you're human. You're a beast,'" Gao said police told him in September 2009.

At one point, six plainclothes officers bound him with belts and put a wet towel around his face for an hour, bringing on a feeling of slow suffocation.

"It's hard to fathom what they might be referring to when they say that he violated his parole given that he seems to have been under constant supervision," said Joshua Rosenzweig, a human rights researcher based in Hong Kong. "It's kind of cynical."

Formalizing Gao's detention as a prison term, Rosenzweig said, gives Chinese leaders a ready response to queries from foreign governments and officials. Gao's case has repeatedly been raised by the U.S. and European governments, drawing cryptic responses if any from Chinese officials. U.S. Ambassador Gary Locke mentioned him in a public statement last weekend.

Gao's wife fled China with their two children, escorted by human traffickers overland to Southeast Asia, around the time he first disappeared. They now live in the United States.

Now living in California, Geng said she learned about the Xinhua report when a friend called her as she was taking her daughter to school. "We've asked them (the Chinese authorities) so many times, and they would never tell us anything," Geng said.

She said the family has yet to receive any notice from the police or courts about Gao's case and they still have no idea where he is.

Adding to the confusion and uncertainty, Geng said local police called Gao's elder sister in Shandong province on Thursday, and asked if Gao was there with her.

"I am not at ease," Geng said. "I still don't know where he is or what kind of condition he's in."

Activists in China seemed astounded and outraged by the news. Huang Qi, who runs a rights monitoring group in Sichuan province, strongly condemned what he said was the use of the judicial system to persecute dissidents and he offered his services to Gao's family.

"Gao Zhisheng has used his actions to write a glorious page in the history of the Chinese democracy movement," Huang said in a statement.

Amnesty International called the move to send Gao to prison "a travesty."

"This inhuman treatment must stop. Gao Zhisheng and his family have suffered enough and he must be freed," Catherine Baber, deputy director in Asia for the group, said in a statement.

German Human Rights Commissioner Markus Loening called the report on Gao a cause of "great worry" and said he would urge China once more to shed light on his case.

"I will push for Gao Zhisheng being able to live a life in dignity and freedom," he said in a statement.

Maran Turner, executive director of Freedom Now, a Washington D.C. rights group that has campaigned for Gao's release said that Gao's formal imprisonment was "blatant repression behind a thin facade of legality."

Bob Fu, the founder of China Aid, a Texas rights group that focuses on Chinese issues, and a friend of Gao's said in an email that the court decision was "totally unacceptable and laughable.

"The top Beijing government leadership owes a clear explanation to the international community and Gao's family for this new hideous detention," Fu said.

He added that "silence was not a diplomatic option" and urged the United States and global community to tell Beijing the Gao case would hinder its interest in the world.

While Gao may be the most prominent government critic to be treated so harshly in years, the authorities have done so with other dissidents.

Du Daobin, an outspoken critic also convicted of subversion and sentenced to three years in prison in 2004, did not immediately start his sentence, according to the Laogai Research Foundation, a Washington-based advocacy group that runs a website for which Du wrote. Instead, Du was released and lived under probation for four years before being sent to prison in 2008, apparently because he continued to criticize the government online.

Gao's family and supporters meanwhile have continued to campaign for him, with little result. His brother, Zhiyi, has been on a constant search for information. When he asked Beijing police in September about his brother, one officer told him Gao Zhisheng was a "missing person and no one knows where he is."

Comet survives fiery plunge through sun

A newfound comet defied long odds Thursday, surviving a suicidal dive through the sun's hellishly hot atmosphere, according to NASA scientists.

Comet Lovejoy plunged through the sun's corona at about 7 p.m. ET, coming within 87,000 miles of our star's surface. Temperatures in the corona can reach 2 million degrees Fahrenheit, so most researchers expected the icy wanderer to be completely destroyed.

But Lovejoy proved to be made of tough stuff. A video taken by NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory spacecraft, or SDO, showed the icy object emerging from behind the sun and zipping back off into space.

"Breaking News! Lovejoy lives! The comet Lovejoy has survived its journey around the sun to reemerge on the other side," SDO researchers tweeted.

SDO is one of many instruments that scientists ? eager to record and study the comet's presumed demise ? trained on Lovejoy as it streaked toward the sun.

"We have here an exceptionally rare opportunity to observe the complete vaporization of a relatively large comet, and we have approximately 18 instruments on five different satellites that are trying to do just that," Karl Battams, a scientist at the Naval Research Laboratory in Washington, wrote on the Sungrazing Comets website before Lovejoy's closest solar approach.

Battams runs the website, which is devoted to comets discovered by two different spacecraft: NASA's Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory (STEREO) and the Solar and Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO), which is operated jointly by NASA and the European Space Agency (ESA). [Death of a Comet: Photos of Sungrazing Comet Lovejoy]

Preparing for the end
Lovejoy has a core about 660 feet wide. It belongs to a class of comets known as Kreutz sungrazers, whose orbits bring them very close to the sun.

All Kreutz sungrazers are thought to be the remnants of a single giant comet that broke apart several centuries ago. They're named after the 19th-century German astronomer Heinrich Kreutz, who first showed that such comets are related.

Comets plunge into the sun on a regular basis, but they rarely give much advance notice of their suicidal intentions. That's why scientists were so excited about Lovejoy. Australian amateur astronomer Terry Lovejoy discovered the icy wanderer on Nov. 27, giving researchers plenty of time to map out their observation campaign.

And that campaign has been intense, involving five different spacecraft. In addition to SDO, SOHO and STEREO, scientists planned to use Japan's Hinode satellite and ESA's Proba spacecraft to track Lovejoy's movements, Battams wrote.

NASA also created a website providing updates about the comet's pass through the corona, as well as images of the event beamed down by SDO. It can be found here: http://sdo.gsfc.nasa.gov/data/lovejoy.php

For his part, Terry Lovejoy said he was happy to have made a contribution, and he marveled a bit at all the attention the comet has been getting.

"It's been tremendous," Lovejoy told Space.com. "Apparently it's all over Facebook, and I don't use Facebook. But there's a lot of interest. I think a lot of people like the name ? the Lovejoy name seems to strike a chord with people."

A dramatic escape
Lovejoy is quite large for a sungrazing comet, and experts expected it to die an impressive death. The website Spaceweather.com, for example, predicted Lovejoy would blaze as brightly as Jupiter or Venus in the sky as it neared the sun.

Battams also expected a good show, saying the comet might even be visible from the ground around sunset today in the Northern Hemisphere.?

"I do think that it will put on a spectacular show for us and will be the brightest Kreutz-group comet that SOHO has ever observed," Battams wrote last week.

Though the early returns are just starting to come in, those forecasts appear to be on the money. Observations from various spacecraft do indeed show Lovejoy flaring up significantly as it neared our star.

Researchers will keep analyzing the images to better understand the comet's daring solar approach. And now skywatchers apparently have another shot to catch a glimpse of the resilient Lovejoy on Friday morning.

For observers in North America, the comet will rise approximately 5 to 10 minutes before dawn and will be situated to the upper right of the sun. If Lovejoy is still shining at least as brightly as Venus, it may be visible, experts say.?

You could also try to spot Lovejoy after the sun comes up, if you're exceedingly careful. Block the rising sun behind a distant building and focus on the part of the sky 3 to 4 degrees above and to the right of the sun (your clenched fist held at arm's length is equal to roughly 10 degrees).

CAUTION: Never point binoculars or a telescope at or near the sun, and never look directly at the sun with the naked eye. Serious eye damage can result.

And don't get your hopes up, either. The comet may well be too faint to see, experts say.

Banks See Their Footprint Downsized in 2011 ... - Yahoo! Finance

Ever since America's vast financial sector blew up the economy, demanded and took (without apology or gratitude) massive bailouts, and lobbied and fought against reforms, Americans have been hoping and praying that somebody, somewhere would downsize the bankers ? downsize their ambitions, their egos and their capacity to wreak havoc.

Bankers' high level of self-regard remains unchecked. J.P. Morgan Chase CEO Jamie Dimon last week had the temerity to complain about all the complaining about inequality, and about his own tax bill. As Gary Rivlin of the Daily Beast noted, the wails came a from a guy whose stock hasn't risen in several years, and whose bank has paid billions in dollars in fines to settle a variety of alleged regulatory transgressions. In the spring, J.P. Morgan Chase paid a fine to settle suits alleging that it had improperly foreclosed on soldiers.

But there has been some progress on reducing the profile of the banking system in the U.S. In fact, it's one of the lesser-told trend stories of 2011. Thanks to the lingering effects of last decade's debt crisis, changes in the markets, this decade's debt crisis, and some elements of regulation and legislation, the footprint banks occupy in the economy, in the markets, in politics, and in the culture ? while still wildly disproportionate ? has fallen over the course of the year.

Banks are definitely a smaller presence in the investing world than they were a year ago. The Keefe Bruyette & Woods large bank index, which tracks the stocks of large banks, and KBW's capital market index, which tracks the performance of investment banks, are off about 28 percent for the year.

Some of America's largest U.S. banks continue to downsize as they recover from the self-inflicted wounds of the credit bubble. Bank of America, which is still choking on the ill-timed acquisition of Countrywide Financial, has seen its stock fall toward the dreaded Abraham Lincoln line. To raise capital and protect against further losses, it has sold off credit card assets outside the U.S. and shares it owns in China Construction Bank. With its stock in the five dollar range, Bank of America has a market capitalization of about $54 billion. Citi, the bank formerly known as Citigroup, was the largest U.S. bank by assets in the pre-crisis era. But the bank has been holding a years-long garage sale of hundreds of billions of dollars of assets it places in its Citi Holdings unit. Between the third quarter of 2010 and the third quarter of 2011, Citi Holdings' assets fell 31 percent. Citi has recently sold off non-core assets like the record company EMI.

The big, universal investment banks such as Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley are also feeling the pain from a variety of sources: the carnage in Europe, high-frequency trading, new regulations, a general societal disgust with their way of doing business. Even with access to free money from the Fed and very low interest rates, it's difficult for very large investment banks to make money ? or at least the kind of money that sets managing directors' hearts aflutter. And so they're slimming down. Morgan Stanley this week announced it is going to get rid of 1,600 jobs in the upcoming quarter. Goldman Sachs, which has been on a cost-cutting crusade, is getting rid of an unusually large number of partners this year, as Susanne Craig of the New York Times reported. Yahoo! Finance reported on Tuesday that bank analyst Richard Bove has slashed his estimate of Goldman's fourth quarter earnings by 66 percent. European banks, burned by the crisis at home, are getting rid of employees around the world, including in the U.S. France's Credit Agricole on Thursday said it would cut jobs in the U.S., and around the world, following in the footsteps of fellow citoyenne Societe Generale.

While bank branches may seem ubiquitous, the number of small banks has also fallen. We've noted that the pace of bank failures has been subsiding. (Here's the complete failed bank list.) As the FDIC's quarterly profile shows, "through the first nine months of 2011, there were 74 insured institution failures, compared to 127 failures in the same period of 2010." But four straight years of failures, mergers, and a lack of interest in opening new banks has led to a significant decline in the number of banks the FDIC insures: from 8,564 at the end of 2007 to 7,436 in the third quarter.

So, to sum up: In 2011, we've got fewer banks, more very large banks with smaller asset bases, and lower stock-market values for the biggest players. Banking executives would consider 2011 a year to remember. I call it a start.
